Eagle Nebula (M16) in Modified SHO Palette

So here is the 2nd narrowband effort from my remote imaging in Green Valley, AZ. This was collected over a handful of nights in April and May of this year. The post processing was again time consuming, but not as bad as my Elephant Trunk, both because this is a brighter object, and also because I am starting to nail down the post processing steps that give me the results I am after, and avoid the ones that are unnecessary or dead ends. This is about 13 hours of data, mostly in narrowband, but with a very small amount of RGB star data thrown in to give my naturally colored stars. The fun thing about that technique is that when it works as desired, there is really no need for star reduction at all. In fact in this image, because I forgot to take any RGB data till the last night, I think the stars are perhaps too faint, but at least the star colors are pretty natural looking, with very few totally saturated stars.

So the Eagle Nebula is of course the location that the Hubble Telescope used to produce its famous 'Pillars of Creation' image. Those structures can be seen in the center of this image (much smaller of course :) ) It is hypothesized that the pillars may be in the process of being dissipated by the high energies of the nearby protostars that are forming, but because they are over 5000 light years away, they still appear intact from Earth.

Totally amazing and inspiring work Mike! The detail in this is mind boggling, and it certainly gives me something to shoot for in the future.

I am not sure why, but I had the same feeling about it looking more 3 dimensional than many of the other images I have done. It 'looks' like the blue OIII ionization layer is behind the other stuff, and I guess that sense is enhanced by how the center appears to open out. I think that might be accurate but in truth I really do not know. Another good effect that comes from getting lots of data perhaps...

Thanks Jim! Well, you have the dark skies at least if you are over at Joshua Tree. The next step is lots of data I think. This object does look decent in natural color filters, taking on a very red look I think. It is very bright for a deep sky object and should show well. This was shot at 580mm on a 4/3 sized crop sensor, so it would be much smaller for you in the frame, even at 600mm on your big zoom. My astro camera pixels are 3.8 micron, giving me a resolution of 1.34 arcsec / pixel on this. I bet you would still get a cool image, especially given all the other wispy cloud action going on all around this object.
