Elusive Grandfather Mountain

I spent last weekend at the Annual Grandfather Mountain Nature Photography Weekend. It was my first time as a participant at the event, and won't be my last, it was also my first taste of Grandfather Mountain...and it won't be my last...I thought I would share a couple of images from my time there.

#1: Elusive-Not likely to be a well received image, but its one of my favorites from the trip...

#2: A Break In The Clouds-Sunset from the top...it was a mix of fog, clouds and lots of wind but we were rewarded with a spectacular sunset, that lasted much longer than they usually do in the East.

#3: The Cloud...this formation was the center of attention, it stretched north to south, and was massive...everyone there from up top and down below photographed it...I waited until it turned pink and purple...that color didn't last long.

I have so many more to edit...but will save them for another time...

Seriously nice scores with these shots Travis. The B&W is interesting for it's sense of mystery with the top of the mountain disappearing into the clouds. I love the sunburst and view in the second one - there is some nice depth in that view. The cloud deserved the attention it got from your group - great atmospherics for a viewpoint like this.

You are right, the first one doesn't grab me - I don't see much structure/center of interest/pattern, etc. so I loose interest. The color shots on the other hand are both outstanding. The sunset being esp. nice with the great clouds and the rocks leaning toward the sun as if they are watching it with you.

Thanks Alan. I appreciate your feedback...the second was with the CV12mm...when used in the right scenes, it really works! That last one...I wish that the Rhododendron bush in the foreground was in full bloom...that would have sent me over the top!

Oh Wow, these are excellent. I've only been to Grandfather once and this makes me want to go back.
Thanks Mike, Grandfather Mountain is such a nice place...I already can't wait to go back.

Jim, I very much see your point about #1...it does not have a strong subject, and I guess I am falling victim to something I talk about in presentations a lot...is that we get connected with the event, or time and place when we took the photograph, and that holds us, but it doesn't connect with the viewer...

These are some amazing images Travis, I like them all.
Thank you very much Ben.

Travis, these are great ! I saw what you wrote to Jim D so I understand #1 ie connection etc, Love the light and your comp in #2 and of course the color in #3 which you indicated you waited for I also like the contrast of texture in the clouds.
I enjoyed seeing all of these.
Regards,
Dean

Hey Travis, I like the mystery of #1, it has a bit more of a subtle beauty. #2 has a great sunburst, that CV 12mm sure looks like a good lens. And you saved the best for last, that cloud is so amazing. I like your composition as it's a great anchor but doesn't distract from that magnificent cloud.

So it sounds like Grandfather Mountain is a real name? When I first heard you talking about it on FB, I thought Grandfather Mountain was a made up name.

Hey Dean, Thanks for taking the time to look at the images. The color in #3...yeah, a lot of the images I have seen posted, were all shot when the cloud was lit up in golden light...I had hopes that it would go more pink/purple as the sun got low...I was willing to risk not getting an image at all if that didn't happen...I was too busy shooting #2 at the time!

Thanks Jim, I like subtle sometimes, and I like darker moody black and whites...they are not for everyone...but they are for me! Yes, that little CV12 is a stunning lens, very sharp, and such great simple sunstars...yes, Grandfather Mountain is the real name of a mountain and the place.
