Fall at Mirror Lake

The fall colors in the Columbia River Gorge were a bit on the dull side after the glorious show we got in 2023 but there were some nice hues this year in spots. This is a 2 shot pano view of Mirror Lake and Crown Point at the mouth of the Gorge from a late October visit.

That's a perfect composition Alan. Love the lines in this.

Is there any way to use Mirror Lake as a mirror? It doesn't appear to have any land access on foot.

Thanks Jim - you are correct about land access and that's also true for most of Rooster Rock park south of the freeway. There is a trail that goes around the edges of this area but almost no views beyond the trees and bushes at all. Most of the bushes are chest high blackberries just to top that off. The edges of the lake look like grassy ground but they are in fact swamp grasses and the base of the plants are in mid calf height water. The trail is about 30' over to the right of the lake and has almost no view of the water. I have tried dropping my drone down over the lake and got this shot last year:

As I dropped down to around 15' above the water I disturbed a heron that circled around the drone for a moment and then flew off while I grabbed the shot. I felt guilty about disturbing the heron but got over it after seeing the shot :)

both are great shots, but i love the view in the first one.
Thanks - this is my favorite park for off season flights and when the colors are right can be quite amazing. I typically shoot the view in the first image every time I visit the park.

Still nice colors even if it doesn't match last years bonanza. Nice compositions in both but the first one stands out.
Thanks Jameel - the interesting part in comparing 2023 and 2024 is that the first image was taken on October 22 and the shot from 2023 was shot on Oct. 23. I was actually trying to match the dates for the colors. The difference in the colors for the trees on the left side of the lake is pretty dramatic.

Both photos are very nice. The pano ratio and comp is really nice on the first one. I'll have to remember this spot when I come back through.

Thanks Aaron - park in the main lots at Rooster Rock State Park and then walk back over the freeway bridge to get into this part of the park. There is a perimeter trail that leads around the wetlands below Latourell and Shepherd's Dell Falls. This is one of the first breaks in the trees along that trail where you can launch a drone.
