Fall Understory

A lot of the color in the Oregon Coast Range is in the forest understory below the evergreen canopy with mostly yellows and orange dominating the palette. This is an example of that from the Herman Peak Road in the Siuslaw National Forest above Florence.

Thanks Michael - it takes a little more work to find the places with the best understory displays but its worth the effort. Not sure you would want to try to get up this slope to get into the colors with a roughly 20' blackberry infestation alongside the road. I screwed up and had a drone drop into a blackberry thicket once in the gorge and decided I was going to retrieve it anyway. Totally destroyed the sneakers and pants I was wearing and looked like a bloody mess by the time I finally gave up and traced my steps back out.

Thanks John - the trunks in this case are a deciduous tree called alders. I once thought they would give us colors like aspens but their leave simply turn a sickly shade of green and drop with no further embellishment.

Thanks Jameel - lots of dense foliage in this area but not as much colors as I spotted in this stand.

Thanks Monika - this is on the west facing slopes of the Oregon Coast Range with 80-90" of annual rainfall so bare ground between the trees is hard to find.
