Goblining up the Stars

Very nice. That's quite a bit of light near the horizon. Is that smoke being lit up by the moonlight?

I have spent more than a few nights in the campground there but all back during film days

Thanks Alan. No smoke at all.

You ought to revisit some of your old film haunts and capture them again with digital. :)

I have tried visiting Goblin Valley on 3 occasions in recent years and was turned away with a full campground every time 😒

Isn't it great being able to cherry pick from a time-lapse like that! Wonderful shot - the clouds and perfect lighting really make it come together.

I bet, it's not too large. But you can camp right outside Goblin Valley. It's all BLM land. Lot's of people set up and just camp there.

I have actually never camped in the campground at Goblin Valley because I am always up all night shooting the stars, so I don't need to camp. :)

Thanks so much Jim! Earlier in the night there was no clouds in the sky, but the moon was brighter which washed away the MW a bit. As I watched the clouds, I saw there was a time where the clouds were pretty perfectly balanced on both sides, with the MW in the middle.

This is out at Goblin Valley in Utah. It's one of the images in my sequence of shots for the timelapse I created. Milky Way in Goblin Valley | Focal World

The moon had just set, so the goblins got darker and the sky got darker and the Milky Way showed up a bit more.

Jim, nice work, the clouds add depth to the scene. I have taken various Milkyway photos, when there are clouds in the night sky, the scene really comes alive.

I like the opening in the clouds around the Milky Way, and the processing is really nice. I'm surprised you were able to get as much detail out of the goblins at those settings. That's more than a stop darker than my normal settings.

Thanks Oliver. I know of lot's of people who won't even shoot at night if there are clouds, but I found out many years ago that clouds can add such a cool sense of mystery to the night sky. So I always embrace clouds at night.

I appreciate that a lot Tim.

Right after this I did switch to ISO 3200 as the moon get even further behind the horizon and it got noticeably darker. I had to darken the ground layer when I processed this. The ground was almost daylit bright as the ground was still getting what I am guessing is some reflected light from the moon, and light from the stars on it.
