Grosvenor's Arch

At the upper end of Cottonwood Wash in Southern Utah is a sandstone formation with an arch at the top. Named after the founder of National Geographic - Grosvenor's Arch.

This formation doesn't really match anything else in the immediate vicinity. As another geographic point of reference for this you can also access the area by continuing south on the road that leads to Kodachrome Basin.

C&C always welcome.

Hi Alan, I have stopped there on the way back from Toraweap Point via Cottonwood Canyon. Not an easy place to frame, but I like what you have here.

Striking scene, Alan. Gotta love the geology and terrain on display in Southern Utah. I'm hoping to visit the area again this winter.

Nice, Alan. As Ben said, it is not easy to get a good comp of this arch. The best approach is to go with a postcard portrait like this one.

Hey Alan,

A very nice photo here, very natural looking. I might have hit the Saturation button for about 10%, but I do know you like the more natural look.

One of the things that I really like on this is the clouds, and how they seem to be radiating out from the arch. Visually that's really strong.

Thanks for the comments - the clouds dictated my framing for this image. Not certain how I would have approached the scene without them.

I was fortunate to have nice clouds to play with all day without squalls that could have turned Cottonwood Canyon into a muddy mess.

The thing I like most about the image is the perceived line you've captured from left to right. The tree and various aspects of the rocks make a somewhat diagonal line separating land from sky.
