Growth on Red Rocks

Once the roots get going they can crack the rocks and create room for airborne silts to accumulate. They effectively make their own place to grow and break up the rocks. Neat example with the ponderosas and shrubs.

Thanks Alan I have noticed the silts in the crevices in the rocks and the plants growing in these places. Trees and plants are amazing as they seem to be able to grow almost anywhere, eg, the sanddunes, high mountains, and my driveway to mention a few sites! ;)

Plant roots can split solid rock. They can exert amazing amounts of force once the roots penetrate even hairline cracks and once they get a foothold they can pry the crack open far enough to allow dirt to fall in and create an environment for even more plants. Sidewalks are no match for the roots of a large tree.
