Guide to Fall Color in the U.P. of Michigan: #1 Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

The upper peninsula of Michigan is a spectacular place to photograph during the fall season. It has birches, red maples, and sugar maples providing glorious colors in beautiful landscapes. Fall color begins to peak away from Lake Superior in higher elevations the last week of September and can still be seen near the lake in the second week of October. This, of course varies somewhat from year to year.

This area is replete with State Parks, Scenic Sites, a National Lakeshore and a plethora of waterfalls. What I am gong to do with this guide is headline the major features and the nearest town to each feature for accommodations.

PICTURED ROCKS NATIONAL LAKESHORE (Munising Michigan)
This is a spectacular region of steep mineral stained cliffs, numerous waterfalls, and many excellent hiking trails. By far, the best way to see the cliffs is by taking the boat tour or kayaking on Lake Superior out of Munising. I recommend the sunset Spray Falls Tour for the best light. Here is the website for the tours: https://picturedrocks.com/fares-schedule/

The first series of images were taken from a tour boat.

These last five images can be reached by short hikes from parking lots. Here is a map of the park to show access points for these features. You can save this image and then print it out to get a bigger version.

Very interesting geology along the shorelines and I like the waterfalls too. The lone tree atop Chapel Rock is quite unique.
