HB Pier with seaweed

Hey Ryan,

I like that you kept the pier legs clean in this version as well, but I think I prefer your other comp. The opposition of the seaweed direction to the pier's direction works well, but the clouds didn't cooperate and give you a cloud parallel to the seaweed. I think that would make this work so much better, but unfortunately clouds don't listen to our wants.

Hey Ryan,

That's a pretty nice piece of seaweed there. I am not usually a big fan of seaweed in photographs, normally because for as cool as it looks at the beach, it always ends up feeling like a distraction when I get home and review my photos. But in this case, I think the seaweed looks pretty cool, and it does seem to compliment the scene. Perhaps its the twilight lighting that is helping it to blend in better?

I would suggest a 4:5 format crop on this. Try cropping off the top since as Tim noted the clouds aren't really helping this image, so cropping off the top which ends up giving you just a little bit of sky above the pier, I think allows the eye to better just focus on the two main elements, the seaweed and the pier.

I like this better than your other composition, as this one is more unique with the seaweed in it. I agree with Jim, the upper clouds aren't adding to the photo so rid it of the distraction. Might be able to knock a little bit of the sand off the bottom too, when I scroll the image on my monitor (24" 1920x1080) it looks best when it's cropped right above the point where that center round dark spot is. Beautiful colors, love the opposing diagonal lines of the pier and the seaweed.

Fantastic starbursts too, which lens did you use? I don't get that many points from my 24-105L.

So here is the crop. I can definitely see the need for it. I'm so used to wanting to keep my images in the 4:3 format, so I typically don't crop, but I'll have to consider it more often.

Thanks John. I agree with everyone about the crop. Once it was brought to attention, I was like..."yeah, needs to go".

Hey John,

With the moisture in the air from the waves crashing, almost any lens will starburst. And as seen from Ryans setting of f11, you don't need to be shooting at f22 like we normally might to get a star burst.

Hey Ryan,

That crop to 4:5 elevates this image to a completely different level! Cropping is a very important visual tool. I think most of us get so used to shooting wide, that it's no longer second nature to think to crop an image. If anything, we are thinking about using more images so we can create something even wider as a Pano... :)
