High and Dry

Many people think of Oregon as cloudy, wet, and rainy, but the Eastern half of the state is just the opposite. This is the Alford Desert 's playa on a beautiful September day. The sky was full of nice puffy clouds, plus this one closest to the camera which decided it was time to break apart.

Well seen - I like this composition. Doesn't look like a nice place to be on foot and out of water.....

Thanks Alan. It's also not a good place to be when it's raining - water turns the playa into a quagmire and a stuck vehicle can be there for a while.

That's what I always thought about Oregon, wet and lots of trees. It might have been 20 years ago when I found out that Oregon had a desert. My mind was blown! I still need to get there.

Thanks Jim. You should drive the Steens Mountain Loop before it closes for winter. Nice view of the Alford Desert from a mile above, and probably great for astro, just cold.
