High Desert Solitude

An iconic scene in the west - places people tried to settle in that weren't viable. I like the big sky here since it puts emphasis on the harsh environment at hand.

I have seen a lot of scenes like this one and always have to stop and wonder how hard it must have been to survive winters in a place like this and how long the builders lasted before moving on. It is not a piece of landscape that lends itself to fixed location habitation.

Everytime I see one of these I tell my wife, there a fixer upper for us. High desert indeed, some snow hanging around. I like it.

Thanks Alan for the thoughtful comment.
The northwest has its forest and the sense of surroundings, whereas much of the west was developed on open land, exposed to all kinds of weather and really not very hospitable.
The "why" behind this location was the lust of gold, as you most likely surmised this was shot on the outskirts of Bodie.

Very nice Zeph!

Like Alan, when I see these places like this I often will pause and wonder what it is they were doing there, how long did they live in a particular structure, etc... Winters for sure would be tough there, especially since wood sources for the stove and fireplace were pretty non existent in much of those hills.
