In Memory of Ben Egbert

I'm reposting this here...

I post this image of my fine friend Ben Egbert with sad eyes today. Here he is at a place that was close to his heart, Skyline Overlook, Utah. Ben and I shared a strong background in mechanics and engineering, having had similar experiences in our careers. I never knew him in his wilder younger days when he raced cars and or motorcycles, working on them himself. He came to me with so many photographic questions and he was always so gracious for the answers. I had the pleasure of going out with him on a great one on one photo camping journey to his favorite places in Utah, as well as with our group outings with FocalWorld members.
Ben and his lovely wife put me up in their home even with my doggie. Just great folks. I will miss Ben terribly.

The family hopes to put together a photo book with Ben's best/favorite photos. When my son saw this picture, he immediately said it needed to be on the last page with him waving goodbye doing what he loved. We would like to ask permission to use your photo for that purpose. Thank you for a wonderful memory!

Carol, I'll take care of this for you. Give me a few days to properly process the file and I'll send it to you.

The world has lost a very good man, our loss is heavens gain. Ben was an inspiration to all that knew him, not only through his photography, but as a kind and thoughtful soul. His zest for life was rivaled by none. With a sad heart we say good-bye to a man that could always make us smile. Focal world won't be the same without him.

I never had the privilege of meeting Ben, in person, but through his talented photography and his kind and helpful observations I‘ve learned much from and about him. I will miss his inspirational participation in FocalWorld.

I just found out about Ben's passing this morning via an email from Ben's daughter Wendy. I've known Ben since 2007. We met on DPR in a photo sharing thread. We corresponded back and forth, regarding our NEC LCD2690 monitors in the beginning, but expanded our conversations to other topics. I met up with Ben in 2008 at the GC North Rim and have been meeting up with him ever since. We extended our interests to off-roading in the past 3-4 years. Ben was my mentor. I learned a lot about photography from him. I think we meshed well because Ben liked to share and I liked to listen.

OMG I have been out of town with no internet & just got back and saw this. Jim and all, beautiful pictures you have posted in tribute to a wonderful man. I am so saddened to hear about his passing, and I know he is now in the hands of God, and flying over his favorite places taking in the beauty.

RIP Ben, I never had a chance to meet him. When ever I would post I was sure to get a reply from him. He was always very gracious and kind. My condolences to his family and friends . It was wonderful to read all these stories and interactions . He had a big and positive impact on so many people.

Just back from a trip out of touch and wow - I guess this should be expected given the situation but just not ready for this to have happened already - I cannot believe he is gone. I never had the pleasure of meeting Ben in person, but I always felt like I somehow knew him. We both liked landscape and the grand vista style of shot especially, and Ben was such a master at those kind of images. I always looked up to him and treasured his feedback and any other intereatctions. he will be sorely missed. Not sure how to properly respond to this yet, I will have to think more about it.

My heart aches at the loss of Ben. He was a beacon of creativity and inspiration, whose artistic flair painted not only canvases but also many lives in vibrant hues. His passing, though anticipated, has left an echo of profound sadness in my heart, a silence as deep as the passion he imbued in every photo.

Ben's legacy endures in his masterpieces and in the inspirations he sparked in me—an indelible imprint etched in time and memory. This isn't the final goodbye I imagine, but a transition into a different dimension where his art will forever resonate, whispering tales of our shared journey in every pigment and texture.

Although I never met Ben in person, I greatly appreciated the personal advice and tips he gave on where to take photos. He drew maps by hand and provided detailed routes—an act of generosity that I will always remember. His dedication to commenting on countless posts in our forum and to the community members is something I truly admired. Rest in peace, dear friend.

Very sad news. I was really hoping for a repeat of the Utah trip in 2021 that we shared. Such a beautiful soul, we only met up once, but we clicked immediately. He raced and rode motorcycles when he was younger, as do I and we had a lot to talk about there. We spent two nights at Marlboro Point and one night at Skyline. Ben climbed around the rocks with no issue at Marlboro Point, and an inspiration for me as I am a cancer survivor and that was another thing we had in common. Dealing with the disease as a teenager, like I did, is much easier I would imagine. But in your 80's? He continued to live his life to the fullest and really if he had never told me he had cancer, I would not have known. He really enjoyed off roading in his nicely sorted 1st Gen Tundra, and was really impressed with my rig. Especially my Dometic fridge freezer, and ended up getting something similar. That first night at Marlboro I made dinner for the two of us, and he thought it was so good that he called his wife and told her all about it. Then in Hanksville he bought me a steak dinner. LOL I only got to enjoy that one trip with him, but it will stay with me for the rest of my life. RIP Ben, you were truly a gift to the world.

Wow! I am truly sad on this day to find this out. Though I never met Ben in person, I "met" him online on FM years ago and along with Jim, was one of the reasons I was attracted to Focalworld when it started. Ben always came across very humble, kind and gracious in all his interactions with myself and others. This is a true loss.

Due to varying other interests taking precedence, I have not been on this site and contributing much over the past few years but I often think about it. I was pleased with some captures from 2 nights ago and logged in here to share only to find out this sad news. This image I am posting is my most recent digital work and I will share it here in memory of Ben. This seems fitting as the last light of the day fades into the night yet new life is in bloom. :(

Thank you Jon for your kind words. Ben was a kind soul, and I know he will appreciate your photo tribute to him.
