Innies and Outies at the Well

Photographers like to hang out at Thor's Well to catch images of waves getting sucked down into the hole in the basalt shelf like this example.

The Innie:

But if you visit the place often enough there are times where the swells are just the right height and direction with favorable intervals between the swells and the Well turns into a spouting horn instead. Not a common sight as I have visited this place dozens of times and only got a a shot of a spout like this once. This was shot about an hour earlier than the first image.

The Outie:

C&C always welcome.

Nice rendering of the 'well' in the first. I have not actually witness the horn in my couple of time there. Looks like a cloudy day for this visit.

Thanks Jameel - the second image is actually Thor's Well ejecting a water spout instead of seawater simply flowing into the cavity. I have seen Thor's Well push up small quantities of water before but I have only seen it send water this high once on this visit in 2014.

Very nice Alan, it's great to see both.

I had the tide level figured out so as to know when the spout would go off, it's been a long time, but I think it's at a 2.5' tide level that it does this.

I was there a couple of times without it going off, and I took notes each time as to what the height of the tide was so that I could nail it down. Then it was simply a matter of timing that height of tide with the sunset. I was able to get the right timing after the PNW meetup with the old FM group. So that was pretty exciting.

Thanks Jim - as I mentioned to Jameel above this isn't the Spouting Horn in Cook's Chasm. It's Thor's Well actually shooting off a spout instead of simply acting like a drain. Getting shots of water draining down into the well does require the right conditions but is not hard at all - I have thousands of shots of this place and have only seen water shooting up out of the well into the air like this only once.
