Juvenile Purple Gallinule, Green Cay Wetlands, FL

This this is an immature Purple Gallinule. Even though he weighs much more than the lily pads he is traversing, his large feet distribute his weight across a surface area large enough to support him. The adult bird is very beautiful as you can see in the second image below.

Neat looking bird. I really like the iridescence in the colors of the youngster in the first image. The adult looks like it might be even more vibrant but the oblique sun angle doesn't quite fully illuminate it.
