Looking down at Zion

I was in Zion NP, waiting for the sun to get a little higher and clear the huge rock wall behind me to put some direct light on the tree I wanted to photograph. While waiting I noticed some interesting patterns in the rocks I was standing on. There were abstract compositions all around me - these 5 images were made within 50 ft of each other!

There were several of these "sand traps" where a low spot in the rock had filled with blowing sand, the sand then captured these smaller pebbles that were pushed by swirling winds. I must have walked over many of these before I noticed one.

Another sand trap with a very unique shape.

No idea what to call this conglomeration, so I'll just call it colorful.

The layers here remind me of the rocks at Coyote Buttes in Arizona.

Desert Lichen - in happy halloween colors!

Very cool abstracts - glad you decided to look down in a place where most are always looking up. I really like #3 and #4.

Another place to remember to look down for small scenes like this is Valley of Fire S.P.

Hi Michael. These are beautiful images. Your experience proves there is ALWAYS something to photograph. We just have to use our eyes!

A great find! I usually am not good at seeing things I might otherwise trip over. :) I am glad you saw these and captured them. My favorites are #2 and 3. I do also like your Halloween Lichen!

Thanks Alan. I had just picked up a new macro lens, that may have had me thinking more about looking for the small scenes around me.
