Mapleton

Mapleton is a leftover lumber town along the Siuslaw River that used to host one of the larger sawmills in this area. Loggers have long since harvested anything that looked useful and then some which resulted in the sawmill shutting down decades ago and most of the mill has been salvaged for the metal and machinery leaving a large empty spot along the highway. All of the fall colors in this scene are Big Leaf Maples which is how Mapleton got its name.

If you have ever driven from Eugene, Oregon out to the coast at Florence you have been through Mapleton along the way. The bridge in the distance over the Siuslaw River and the roadway visible on the left side of this panorama is OR126 also known as the Eugene-Mapleton Highway. The small road on the right of the frame is Sweet Creek Road and leads back downstream along the Siuslaw River to the Sweet Creek canyon. The bridge over the Siuslaw is the only bridge across the river until you get to Florence with the US101 bridge.

This is a 2 shot 24mm panorama taken with my old Mavic 3 Pro last fall.

Nice fall scene. The waterway provides a nice lead in
Thanks Jameel - for all the times I have driven OR126 as well as Sweet Creek Road I have never seen the view from above until last fall. Looks a little different from above than what I was expecting.

That's a super cool eye in the sky image! It's too bad that the mill couldn't have been left alone.
Thanks Jim - two reasons: 1) there was a lot of metal to be salvaged from tearing it down and 2) the mill was on a huge plot of waterfront property and I think a developer wanted to do something with it.
