Maybe the Last of the Monarchs?

When I was up to Pismo Beach last weekend, I stopped by at the Monarch Preserve there to capture some Monarch Butterflies. Well, I was shocked! There were almost no Monarch's there. This cluster and one other. Last year at this time, there was 16,437 butterflies. This year? 197 butterflies.... 197...

That's so sad. And then the next day I saw a news article saying that the government was going to declare them an Endangered Specie.

They were up about 60 feet high in this Eucalyptus tree. And they were really hard to see. Lot's of people there couldn't spot them. I spotted them, but it would take a few secs to make them out in my viewfinder. They really blend in really well. I tried pushing the contrast more when does make them more visible, but then I thought I would post the version that best matched what I saw with my own eyes.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

There are so many sad 'near extinction' stories Jim. Thanks for sharing this image with us. I can see it would have been difficult to spot these.
