Mirror Lake - a Midwinter View

I wandered up the Columbia River Gorge last Thursday to get a view of the place as it has been a while since we have had good conditions for me to fly between windy days and storms. It was a cloudy day but that usually means less harsh shadows which can often be a problem on a bright sunny day. A bit hard to spot in this frame but there are a couple dozen tundra swans and northern pintail ducks out on the lake.

Thanks Jim - the waterfall is Palisades Falls. They are intermittent and dry up in late summer. Everyone driving on the freeway gets a view of the lake and the falls but it's very hard to get a good view of them on the ground. You can see an opening in the trees just behind the white tractor/trailer rig but there is no shoulder in that area so you would have to hike along the freeway on the traffic side of the railing to get there. The drop-off on the other side of the railing is rather steep and very difficult to walk on. I did try that once and discovered it was a Bad Idea(TM).

Very nice view Alan. The diffused light with the clouds helps with overall lighting of this scene.

Thanks Jameel - we haven't had very good weather for doing much up in the Gorge with high winds and storms through most of the early part of this month. It was nice to finally get a good day with clouds.

Thanks Trent - cloudy is the best light for shooting in the Gorge given the deep shadows of the cliff walls along the south side where most of the waterfalls are located.
