More Calypsos

On a hike the other day, there were more Spotted Coral Root Orchids than I could shake a stick at. I kept walking & on my way back, was excited to have spotted a Calypso orchid. After shooting it, I went another 10 feet and there were a dozen more! I'd completely missed them on my way out. After shooting there, I went on a bit then circled back and from 8' away, I couldn't see them, even though I knew they were there. Adjusting my eyes, I could finally spot them (sort of like focusing manual focus lenses) -- no wonder I missed them on my way out. I got as low as I could, forsaking the tripod completely and just stacking rocks under the lens. Unless I dug a hole, I could only have gotten lower by taking off the L-plate.

And one past it's prime, slowly melting into oblivion.

Same thing. Both are Calypso bulbosa. Common names are confusing as there are so many for the same plant.

Kurt, these are Calypsos, not spotted coral roots. They are tiny.

Ok, sorry about that. That is probably why I've never seen them. BTW, we have a bumper crop of Bog-rein Orchids this year. Do you have those in your area?

Yes, we do. I haven't been to the places where I usually see them as those places are pretty high & probably still snowy. I'll check them out in the next couple of weeks. Snow's melting out pretty quickly, making water levels in the creeks high & limiting access.
