More Southern Vancouver Island

I've been trying to capture some of the moods of Southern Vancouver Island over the past few years. For this thread I will, periodically post some of my IR photos. Here is one from along the coast line just to the northeast of Port Renfrew towards Victoria in the month of February. It was shot with a converted Nikon D800 (full range conversion) using a 590nm filter.

I like the overall scene but am curious about the differences in how the evergreens show up here with the distant trees not reflecting 590nm IR while the close in ones do. Is this just a function of which trees are in the scene or a processing choice?

I don't know what caused this. It is not the processing as I did not do anything to this image other than the standard colour swapping etc. I did not apply a mask or treat the distant parts the image differently. As for the species of conifers... they should be the same along the coast. The only thing that I can see might be the level of haze/mist/rain? Maybe lichen cover may be dampening the chlorophyll in the foliage? I am attaching another image which gives a nice view of the effects of lichens on IR reflectance. You can also see that the IR reflectance dampens as you move up the slope into the clouds where nondirectional/diffuse scattering becomes more prevalent. If anyone has any ideas, then I'm all ears.....

Not sure myself. I haven't taken all that many images out along the coasting IR but probably should get out more with my olde converted 5DMkII. I have been getting distracted playing around with my drone :rolleyes:

For the record when you attach an image make sure you click on the blue button to the right of the thumbnail to insert the image into your post.

That's an interesting look Knut. While it isn't the normal IR look, I have to say that I actually find this image rather appealing. I have been doing IR for I think 3 years now, and I am still trying to figure it out completely. It often seems to have a mind of it's own. :)

I used a Kolari IRChrome filter for the "Island in the Rain" image. It emulates the more traditional "false colour composite" combination where the blue channel is shifted to the green wavelengths, green to red, and red to infrared. This gives the effect of the red foliage. You can get a similar effect from the 590nm filter by using a colour swapping, and then playing with the IHS settings. You don't need to do much with these IRChrome images other than brightness, exposure, etc.
