Naked Sunset

What a difference one night makes - Sunday night was a spectacular sunset color show with lots of interesting cloud layers. Last night was exactly the opposite with no visible clouds anywhere in sight including the almost always present marine layer. It is the case that when I was processing this image I spotted a thin slice of a cloud just above the horizon on the right so the thread title is not totally accurate.

C&C always welcome.

Hey Alan,

Yeah, compared to your other one, the bare skies in this is really noticeable.

I am thinking without clouds, there really needs to be something else to help carry this image. More shadow recovery to see details on the rocks would be the first place I would go. That way the eye can look at the details in the rocks and perhaps not notice the sky. Another idea would be to have moved over to the right and that sea stack further back on the right, I can see some reflections in the sand. I think moving there and getting a tighter shot of that reflection would then add an element to help carry the shot.

I warned you it was a naked sunset :)

It was almost jarring after the night before and I spent a fair amount of time last night trying to figure out ways to get a comp out of the place. I did try to frame things to eliminate most of the sky since there was simply nothing of interest up there. The water streams heading across the sands was the most interesting things I could find.

I do have some ideas to follow up on tonight since I know I am in for more of the same here in Brookings and will see the same thing all the way back up the coastline when I start back tomorrow. This is really weird weather for December along this coastline. I am more used to a couple of days of rain with a couple of breaks to go out and play in before the next storm rolls in.....

I like the soft subtle mood here, Alan. Despite the lack of clouds, it's quite attractive.
I like how you kept a fair amount of beach in the fg. Some would crop a lot of it out as pure empty space, but I think it works to show the long flat beaches characteristic along the coast up there.

One doesn't need clouds all the time to have an interesting and compelling image. This is a case in point. Like the subtle light.

Finding comps without clouds is my challenge for the days ahead - I will be working my way up the coastline to Astoria over the rest of this week starting tomorrow and the weatherdroids are saying this pattern is going to hold until at least sometime next week.
