Painted Wall Milky Way

This is at the Painted Wall view point in Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Amy came up late, about midnight to meet and shoot a bit of the Milky Way. I had been shooting at the Cross Fisures view point, but was switching to the Painted Wall view point when Amy got there. The only bad thing with the view point was with the vertical supports there really was only one person to photograph. So I let Amy set up to shoot and then I did my best to shoot around her without getting too crazy since it's like a 1000' vertical drop there.

So... I don't consider this perfect, but I still liked it. And the processing was a bit rushed with the 5 grandkids, movies, dance recitals, etc I have been busy with.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

Hey Jim, this is really neat, the sky appears to be really dark judging by the MW detail, so whats the light source for the canyon? Whatever it is, I like it a lot.

Ya need to give me some MW lessons this week. But my fastest wide lens is f4, or my 24-70 at f2.8

As a digital image it's a really neat take on the scene. It would sell as a print.

But - it has a painterly feel to it for lighting on the canyon. Seems a bit bright and doesn't seem to be the right shadow.

The ground is lighter because as I was busy helping Amy and I set up for the canyon shot, I forgot to change the fstop from f1.8 to f4. So the ground layer got much brighter then I normally would have had it. I had to darken the ground from how it was shot to combine with a ISO 3200 and 30 sec shot.

This was not my preferred time to shoot the Milky Way as most you know I like single shot MW images with the setting moon to light up the ground. But in this case the moon was almost new and basically gone. So I had to do it the hard way.

Sorry for not clarifying it earlier, I was getting distracted helping my grandson with his laptop.

So the sky is ISO 3200, f1.8 at 30 secs. The ground was shot shortly after at (I believe) ISO 800, 5 or 7 mins, and f1.8 which I had meant to switch to f4.

This will be a view that I will go back and do again at a later date.
