Partial Narrow Band Question

This just came to me as I have been starting to study up and read about Color and Mono Astro cameras.

Currently I am shooting with my Nikon D850 that isn't modified, it picks up a decent amount of Ha, but not as much as a dedicated Astro camera obviously. If I got a Mono Astro camera and for simplicity to start, just used it with the Ha filter and processed just that. Would the result be similar to a dedicated Color Astro camera? Or would it be similar but better then I get from Nikon D850?

I am not saying if I got a Mono camera I would shoot it in just Ha, but trying to see what it would look like in color. Mike posted his recent imaging that was from Ha, but it's only presented in B&W, so I can't tell what the color result would be.

You can probably add the Ha to your nikon image to bring out more of the reds. If you try to make a color image by just using the Ha data alone you will only get different shades of red or green or blue not a true color image.

Thanks Chuck. There is so much to Astrophotography, and I am getting to a place where I think I can start wrapping my brains around some of it. The first year was just kind of doing it, and maybe not totally understanding it.

Jim,

Already answered, but the short answer is, Hα is not visible in the spectrum our eyes see. An unmodified camera will respond to it to some extent, and a modified camera or dedicated astro camera will pick it up much more efficiently. Since it is off the red end of the spectrum, it is often mapped to that color, and a modified or astro camera that is a OSC (one shot color) camera will display it as extra signal in the red channel typically.

I have an image I will post right after this (the target you mention above) and I have mapped that Hα signal to the red channel in that one.

Hi Jim, finally found my Ha Horse Head ! I assigned it to the red channel in Pixinsight. Hope this helps !
