Petrified Beach Ball Beach in San Diego

The name Petrified Beach Ball Beach is my (TM). :)

This is at the North end of Sunset Cliffs in San Diego. After spending the day at the San Diego Zoo on Monday, I had planned for Tuesday to create a video of my Top 3 Beaches of San Diego, which I did and this beach is in that list. You will have to watch the video when I publish it to find out where this beach ranks in my list.

There is no scale here really, so I will say this ball is almost 3 feet tall. Maybe a few inches less. There are 2 of them, the other one is only 2/3rds out from the rock shelf, so this is the best of the 2. There are some remnants there of balls that must have eroded away at the base and are no longer there. It's a really cool spot.

So I have 2 photos shot from the same spot, the only difference is how I cropped them. #1 is at a faster shutter speed and #2 is at a slower shutter speed. I think I prefer #1, but my feelings won't be hurt if you prefer #2. I like it as well, but maybe a hair less then #1. But let me know when you prefer.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

PS. After uploading the photos, maybe #2 is now my favorite. :) So please pick one and say why.

#1 - 1/640th sec

#2 - 1/5th sec

I like them both but if forced to choose I'd go for the first one. I do like the spray in the second image with the feeling of motion but the first one gives me more of a feeling of scale for your beach ball along with the proximity to the edge of the waves.

I like both, the frozen spray in the first is great. The slow speed in the second is where I live with waterfalls so it will always be liked. I see them more as a complimentary pair then competing images. Great job all the way around

Thanks Alan, all valid thoughts.

I like your thought here Tim that they are complimentary.

i like the comp. in the first, but the edit in the second. we have a large wooden ball on a beach, always wondered what it was. this natural one at least looks like it belongs there.

Great point on the edits, not sure what happened to #1, I need to redo the ground on it.

A large wooden ball? Wow, that's different.
