Pulling up to the Northern Lights Dock

Back on Oct 10th, 2024 there was a huge huge Northern Lights show. I had to drive 5 or 6 hours to get to where I would have clear skies and escape the clouds, but it was totally worth it.

I had 4 cameras running, this is from one of the Nikon Z6II's. This is the one with the Viltrox 16mm f1.8, one of the absolute best night time lenses there is for mirrorless.

I am not so sure about the leaves at the top, I don't typically use that type of framing. I could crop them out. But they started to grow on me, so I need to see what you guys say.

And it's a bit different having someone in the image. He was a guy from one of the bigger Northern Lights groups on FaceBook that I ran into. Had had brought a lawn chair and was just sitting out there for about half the night. The camera in the middle is my Nikon Z8 with the Laowa 10mm f2.8.

I love the lights and the reflected light on the lake water. The glow really makes the dock stand out. I'm with Kyle on the leaves - not enough up there for context and they drag my eyes away from the visual action in the scene.

Thanks Alan. That's usually my thinking as well. That's why I wanted to ask because I was afraid I was just starting to like them because I had stared at them for so long.... :)

You're getting quite the collection of aurora images! Agree to lose the leaves, it's stronger without them.

I appreciate the thoughts Michael.

Yeah, I went from never having captured the Northern Lights, to where over the last 3 years I have been able to get some really nice images. It does help that I have moved my fall color location from Colorado to Minnesota/Wisconsin. It helps to already be up that high for a few weeks.

i'd say either more leaves or none at all. preferably none since the sky has the most interest. nice aurora.

Yep, that's totally my thought. And since I don't have more leaves, I guess I need to get the chain saw out and cut those leaves out. :)

A wonderful light show.. you can cut a tree branch from above and it will also create a more beautiful portrait format.

What a sight and what an image! I would lug out all of my cameras for this sight. On my bucket list.
