Recipe #6 - Long Exposure

Neato - just discovering this contest section. FW keeps showing me fun new things!

So here is my entry, a 6 second exposure, from a night up above the Arctic circle in Norway, on the Island of Kvaløya. I had gone out to shoot aurora, and had dutifully been facing north, and there were some weak displays in that direction, but nothing very striking. It eventually got late and I got cold, and so decided it was time to pack it in for the night. As I turned around to face back towards my car to start to tear down, I saw this amazing green streamer of aurora blazing across the sky. It had been high overhead, directly behind me. Of course, when you are that far north, aurora does not have to be north of you, it can be in any direction! I almost tripped over my tripod as I quickly tried to get all swung around and set up to take the shot. Even with some strong moonlight from a more than 3rd quarter moon (which is illuminating the foreground rocks) the color was amazing. And then within about 5 minutes of this shot, it was all but gone.

Awesome Mike, this is a great entry! I am sure I would be tripping over my tripod too if this snuck up on me.
