Red Dawn over Oamaru

On Friday morning, it seems the entire eastern coast of New Zealand woke up to a vibrant red dawn. As soon as I saw what was up, I rushed down to a lookout point overlooking the town and harbour of Oamaru, and was mesmerised by the colours and textures. Here is one of my favourite images from that morning.

Yeah, it was unreal! In processing the images, I actually ended up desaturating them a bit, since the actual colours looked impossible. I had never seen so many people out so early photographing the sky!

I have had the same experience when I have had similar red sunsets here on the coast in California. I am now wondering if the water helps make the colors more intense as the color reflects off the water and maybe bounces back and forth a few times increasing in intensity?
