Saltwick Bay

Shot on the Yorkshire coast in North East England. This location is a little tricky to get to as it involves wading through the falling tide without getting too close to the crumbling cliffs. The ship in the foreground is the remains of the trawler Admiral van Tromp shipwrecked in 1976. This location is a well known midsummer sunset location as it is one of the few locations on the East coast where the sun sets over the sea but this was shot in the morning as the sunset shot would have involved wading back on a rising tide and I am not willing to risk life and limb for an image. I love the twisted remains of the old trawler. Nice point of view for the shoreline that pulls my vision out to the sea stack for depth in the scene and yet still keeps my attention on the wreck.

Wading makes it sound too dramatic. The wreck sits on the stone shelf that you can see and you start the 1/4 mile walk when the water is 1 foot deep with various holes and dips where the water is up to 4 feet deep. I use my tripod as a staff to test for the deep bits and keep me upright in the very slippery bits. If you try and start before the front edge of the shelf is above the water level waves rush across and overwhelm you so using waders or just getting very wet is too dangerous. The rock that you are walking on is very slick. I am about to post a colour version of the front of the shelf where the rock is totally different and I am glad to say very sticky underfoot and this shows the waves on this windless day. Ken
