Salvage Week - 4/28/2024

I have a different kind of salvage job for today. I had a break in the showers this morning and shot some blooms including one of a camellia I thought looked nice when I chimped the shot in my camera. Turned out focus was just a bit too far back for the bloom petals closest to the camera - one of the hazards with handheld closeups like this one.

Original straight out of the camera (I always intended to crop the shot down):

Lots of edits applied for this result starting with the crop and removal of the OOF reds in the foreground. Focus for the middle of the camellia took several steps as I didn't want to over sharpen the whole scene. I first used a high pass filter and then used Topaz Denoise 6 to clean up the high pass output followed by adding a black layer mask and painting out the mask on the flower itself. I added one more layer using Topaz Sharpen AI with yet another black layer mask and again painting out the mask just for the center of the bloom to get this result:

I went to look for some of my old Mt Rainier photos to add to this Doug, but I don't have any with me.

So I went for Alaska, back in 2008 with a top of the line Nikon D300. Well, top of the line for me. :)

I don't photograph many birds, but when I saw a few puffins out on a cruise boat to the glaciers up there, I was estatic!

Good recovery on this one.

Good looking job on the Tufted Puffin, Jim. If you cropped it down to just include the splashes and the Puffin you might just have a great image. Sorry! I checked it but the image is too small.

This Wild Turkey was in an open area in a forest where I was walking. I pointed my camera and zoomed in as it started to display. I was excited as I always wanted to get a wild tom with the full feather effect. I did not notice that I had moved the camera in my excitement and cut off the front and feet. I used another photo to get the feet and in photoshop extended the canvas and filled in the details.

I used this photo, flipped it so the feet were in the correct orientation and cut, pasted and changed the colour to complete the feet in the original shot.

Here is the final result.

Nice work to salvage this. I wonder what regenerative AI would have done though.
