SH2-54

I am currently out at Joshua Tree NP to do Deep Space Astro. The moon has shrunk, the skies have cleared, and here I am.

My goal was to capture the Lobster Nebula, but found that it wouldn't clear the surrounding hills until closer to midnight, so I had to come up with something else to capture. While looking at SkyGuide I clicked on a red spot and it said it was SH2-54 and it was up after sunset. So I went for it until the Lobster Nebula for higher.

With ASIAir (Astro controller) it has a Live mode, where it stacks the images while it captures them and I can view the Live stacked images on my iPad (used to control the ASIAir). I am also able to save them if I want onto my iPad in addition to the USB stick on the ASI.

So this is one I saved onto the iPad as a Jpg. I then sent it to my iPhone and did some quick editing.

This is certainly tough looking, but it made me happy. I will do an official edit when I get back home, but for now, I was sure impressed with what I could do with a simple edit.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

Seems quite amazing to me you can do astro image processing at all with mobile devices like this. Nice way to spend time waiting for your desired target to become visible.

Jim,

I was expecting less than this, given your disclaimer you shared via text last night. And one must consider that this is live stacked too. Given that I would say this is quite good, although I have no doubt you can exceed this result once you take the raw data through a more conventional workflow. I took the liberty of running the final version from a screengrab through NoiseXTerminator - you do have that, don't you? Obviously not something you could access on your tablet I am sure. Anyway, shows some great potential for the final version I would say.

Thanks Mike, glad you liked it.

The noise was the one thing I had noticed in the background. It wasn't noticeable on my iPhone unless I zoomed in to 100%. I am going to make an assumption that Russel Crowman is not going to release NoiseXtermintor for the iPhone. ;)

And yes, I have NoiseXterminator, BlurXterminator and StarXterminator. But on my PC. I can't imagine anyone processing Astro without those 3 tools.

This was just a for fun exercise, since all I had was a pre stacked Jpg to work off of on my iPhone since I am hanging out in the desert. ;)

This will be processed fully with the individual fits in Pixinsight in a few days.

Oh... one thing that's also cool with the ASIAir Live mode. Not only does it stack the images as it goes, it also applies, a Flat, Dark and Bias. I guess I could the pull the stacked Fit it saves on the USB drive as it goes, but I would rather start fresh in Pixinsight with the individual fits.

So... my mind is still blown about the Jpg quality of the Live stacked image. I hadn't tried the Live Mode before. It's been there, but I usually just use the Autorun mode, which just shows each image on the iPad as it takes them. But as we were talking about the Seestar S50, it dawned on me that the Seestar is using the Live mode, so why don't I try the Live mode on my ASIAir and just see what the results are like.

Yes, pretty impressive and probably gives at least some indication of the level of detail you can expect out of the fully processed image once you do that.
