I went to Pullman for Dad's Weekend at WSU, on Thursday. The weather wasn't very good for photography most of the weekend, and when it was, I couldn't get away. The first shot is the result of my sitting in the hotel room trying to think of something I could shoot on a cold rainy night. It came out just about like I envisioned it. The rain made for some good reflections. What do you think? The second one was a, slam on the brakes, do a U-turn, run out in the field, shot. We were on our way back from Costco in Clarkston, and the clouds were just perfect for some dramatic landscape shots. The only problem was they were moving really fast. The clouds were much more dramatic when I saw this shot, but by the time I got out there, I had to settle for this. Four days in the Palouse, and this was all I got!

I like the road shot at the top - that worked out well considering the circumstances. You may have missed super dramatic light in the second one but you did get some interesting skies to work with. The distant clouds on the horizon are a good reminder of just how flat that area is in general. I like the barn.

The biggest problem with dramatic cloud shots is that you almost need to be out ready for your shot when the drama appears. The farm roads out there don't have abundant places to pull off to shoot so half the time I thought I saw a worthwhile comp go by my window it didn't look the same by the time I got back to the spot.

Very cool work Bill! Good job with thinking about #1 when you were trying to come up with something to shoot. You should post #1 separately in the City/Urban Forum.

#2 sure looks plenty dramatic to me. So if had been looking even better, then you would know what might have been. But from a viewing stand point, I really like the composition and the clouds, they sure work together well here. I think with #2, you could also go for a square crop losing the open sky and above and it would make for an even more dramatic scene, or perhaps simply a different dramatic scene.

Thanks Jim, I was wandering where to post #1, it's City/Urban, but it's also a Night photo. Your crop suggestion sounds good, I will give it a try. I didn't see that when I was editing.
