So...i'm selling my 16-35 F/4 to buy a Canon 24-70 F/2.8 II

I hope i'm not making a bad decision.

I was going to buy a Rokinon 14mm F/2.8 as well for next season's Milkyway, but I decided to get the Irix 15mm F/2.5 because it has filter threads. This will at least replace my 16mm coverage.

I'm getting a used and pristine 24-70 this Saturday for $1,200. Now I gotta sell some other gear.

Yeah, I went back and forth when I was looking for a new 14mm to replace my 14mm Samyang/Rokinon which had gotten decentered.

As you know I ended up getting the Sigma 14mm f1.8 and I have no regrets about that at all. I am using it mainly in low light situations now.

In regards to the Irix, I did go back and forth with that a bit. I think I would have chosen the Samyang/Rokinon 14mm f2.4 new Premium lens they are coming out with over the Irix. But with all of those new lenses there is a lot to choose from, and they all seem to have pro's and con's to them. Laowa also makes an interesting 12mm I was considering.

The Irix seems to be a good lens though, so it will be interesting to see what you feel about it. Did you get the Blackstone version of it?

Is the 24-70 F/2.8 II radically different from the old Mk I version? My old 24-70mm F2.8 is one of the sharper lenses I have owned besides my 24mm TS-E.

I had the original 24-70 and returned it, but then I was still pretty green. I also had the 24-105 and never liked it. The 24TSE mk2 was one of the primes I sold after getting the 24-70 mk2. My reason was that the 24-70mk2 was as sharp at most landscape apertures and I had the 17TSE for tilt and shift uses.

The other primes i sold were a 50 f1.4 Ziess and a 35 f1.4 mk1. Both very sharp lenses, but the 24-70 m2 was just as sharp in my tests.

The only reason I'm going irix over Rokinon is the ability to use my Lee Filters with it. The Sigma is awesome but too costly for me and still does not have filter threads.

The 16-35 f4 L IS is a fantastic lens for landscape use. The 24-70 II is also very good. They make a nice pair. The Rokinon is good for Astro but not so much for landscape work due to its complex distortion. If 16-24 range is important to you, I’d keep it and pair it up with the 24-70 II.

I did end up selling my 16-35. I do miss the 16mm but I vary rarely shot at 17-23mm. Today, I just purchased an Irix 15mm. I needed an UWA for my astro work too and the Irix 15mm fills both astro and landscape needs. I would have only used the 16-35 for 16mm landscape shots.

Well...it may be until next March when I get Milkyway core pictures, but until then, I might do some night seascapes which will have stars in the image. I'll post some of those over the next several weeks. I bought the Irix yesterday from BHphoto, so it should arrive next week.

I was sceptical about it not having IS but I have not missed a step with it. I love it. I have been looking at many 14mm lenses and decided I'm not going to get a WA and just shoot panos for now. More gear to lug around.
