Southwest Trip

I had 2 days to plan a vacation this year since getting off of work is somewhat of a chore. Since flights were crazy to book last minute, the wife and I packed up the car and made the drive from Maryland over to Utah. We've made this drive countless times but since it's been 4 years since we've gotten out there, we forgot how utterly painful it is. Overall though, a great trip. Saw some new places but mostly hung out around Capitol Reef and Escalante. Capitol Reef holds a special place in our hearts so I started processing a few photos from there and the surrounding areas. Any feedback would be great, I haven't shot any landscapes for 2 years and I was struggling with processing :/

This is an interesting set of images that present a very different point of view and lighting for Capital Reef. Nice work on finding scenes and lighting away the usual iconic overlooks we so often see. I love the colors and light in all of the first 3 and the curvy tree in the last one is a really neat shot.

Capitol reef is practically my second home and yet these are all fresh and still very recognizable. Great work showing new perspective on these scenes. And your last one is outstanding. Maybe I need to take two years off to get a fresh perspective.

Hey Jordan,

Man, you have been missed! I am really glad you were able to get back out. Driving from Maryland to Utah definitely would be a chore.

I am sure after a 2 year break you had to knock some rust off of your processing, though these look really nice. My favorite is #2. I really like those nice diamond edges rippling down, and you did a great job working the light with just the right amount of dark I think.

I like the patterns in #3 quite a bit too. I love those repeating edges and colors in it.

#4 is a great take on a tree, with some really nice color in the sky as a backdrop.

In #1, that's the one that works the least for me. The shadows feel a bit too deep and they occupy rather large areas of the photo. I think there is about 3 different things going on in that one, and for me as a whole that one kind of feels disjointed with the eyes not sure where or what to look at.

But I do sure like the last 3 shots, I think those are all winners. Hopefully now that you have gotten back in the saddle you will be getting back out to shoot more. I know I certainly miss your photography as you have a gift for landscapes.

Thank you Alan :)

Thanks Ben, funny enough the tree was taken at Sunset Point which I never devoted any time to exploring. I never realized there was so many interesting trees in that area. Ended up spending a few afternoons shooting there.

Really love that last image!
Thanks Amy :)

Thanks for the feedback Jim, the first one is the image I struggled with the most. I was really excited when I shot it but I agree with you. I spent about 2 hours shooting that area in changing light and have some where the whole image is less contrasty so maybe I'll take another look at those. I appreciate the help, definitely need to knock the dust off haha. Thanks again!

That's a great set, Jordan! I wonder if #1 would work well in b&w? You got some really interesting light -- good for the badlands.
