The tower almost looks larger from a distance than it does up close. The still shot at the end from a distance makes the overall size more apparent than the video footage from directly below the columnar basalt.

Simple - when you are at the base of the columnar basalt you are nearly half way up the lower slopes so you only see the top half. From a distance you see the entire formation and its base.
