Have you seen the Star link going over? I was very surprised by just how many satellites there were. I can't imagine how this will hurt astrophotographers in the future. Neat to see, but somewhat depressing at the same time.

Hey Brian, nice work on capturing these. But you are right they are horrible for us doing Astrophotography. A real pain already and it will only get worse as there are thousands more of them I believe to be launched. And not just the Starlink ones from Elon Musk, other companies are doing the exact same thing, so it's really sad to see.

Alan, those are all separate satellites. And just a fraction of the “link”. I had never seen it before and I was shocked at how many there were. I had my 50mm on and realized that I needed a wider angle lens. I had time to walk inside, get a wider lens, come back out and get these photos. It’s just crazy. I believe there are 40-60 satellites in the link.

Yes, hard to really express how depressing this is shaping up to be. has got to have wide ranging impacts across the whole astronomy community I would think, based on the number of predicted satellites to be put up.

Totally agree. And it’s amazing how quietly they are doing it. Most people have no clue.....

As someone that is now a home owner in rural America with no real access to the internet, I can say that starlink is a lifesaver. I went from 2-5mbps to 50-100mbps. Enough that I can work from my home. For me it is still kind of a luxury. For others it could really be a lifesaver.

I'm willing to clone out some extra lights in my night shots.

Are you part of the Beta testing? I didn’t think they were selling the service yet. Do you have the service all the time? I’m just curious since they don’t have satellites over the US all the time and we live very rural as well.

I got into the beta. So far I've had service all the time, with the exception of the occasional 10-second cut out. I'm at 48° Latitude which is in the area where they have the best coverage so far. I'll be back in that house in a month or so and expect it to be better than when I left as more satellites move into position.

Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely look into it some more. It would be nice to have faster speeds out in the sticks where I live.
