Surprise result

I saw a hummingbird feeding from the red yucca in our yard (couldn't resist trying to get a picture). This was taken with a small-sensor zoom lens camera with a 1.7X afocal teleconverter attached -- 780mm "equivalent focal length" -- hand-held -- autofocus -- with image stabilization. Out of 7 shots, most missed the bird completely as it darted around. This is the one surprising result.

Nice result. Hummers move so quick it can be really hard to get a good shot. I'd be happy with this one.

Culling OOF captures is a way of life with birds in flight. When you get a camera that can shoot faster (like mine with 30 RAW frames/sec) the only difference is how many you have to toss to get a couple of keepers. My camera has a buffer that "preshoots" up to 15 shots when the shutter button is half depressed so squeezing the shutter button and holding it for one second nets you 45 shots. More than once I didn't have a single keeper from that one second burst.

Awesome! The result of this is great!

I can only imagine the challenge of trying to catch the hummingbird as they so often flitter all over the place, just stopping long enough for you to start to move the camera to catch it and it's gone before you can for sure get a shot.
