So, my last post on my visit to France, was to the very small village of Belleau France which is a few minute drive from the American Monument, Cemetery and Battlefield
It’s a very small but pretty little village and is where the Devil Dog fountain is located on private property.
But because of the importance of this fountain and the connection to the Marine Corps, the owners allow visitors entrance to the property,
obtaining a gate key from the staff at the American Cemetery.
This is also the site I took and posted several black and white images.
The fountain was built in the late 1800’s over a natural spring and is when the Chateau landowner installed the Bull Dogs head over the spring, which is actually that of a Bullmastiff,
As the story goes, in the 1980’s the Marine Commandant visited this Monument areas and was told of the fountain. He visited the fountain site, drank from the dogs mouth and forever more it became known as the Teufelshunde or Devil Dog fountain.
Ever since then, its been a pilgrimage destination for US Marines to drink from the Dog’s mouth. It was an awesome and humbling honor to had be able to make this trip and drink from the Teufelshunde mouth.
But It was especially special, but also sad because the only friend I was able to share my travel plans with before I left was Everyday “Frank” from the Teufelshunde MC who unexpectedly passed away in early Aug.
As I drank from the fountain I thought of Frank, OneShot “Jim” and all the other Marines I knew who are no longer with us. Semper Fi…

Reason for the slash through the name? The road was leaving town verses entering it. ( I have to look that one up) lol
