The Blob

While running around Minnesota and Wisconsin, I decided to make a mad dash to Chicago to capture The Bean there, or as I have heard some people call it, The Blob. I called @Tex Schneider since he has shot it in the past for a few tips. Unfortunately because of Covid-19 none of those tips helped.... They had fencing around it so you couldn't get too close, which was good, except for the normal shooting location where then hundreds of people stood shooting selfies and there was a solid line of people being reflected in The Bean. I tried to go with an ND filter to get a longer shutter speed to help the people disappear, but taking Selfies takes a long time and lot's of concentration, so a lot of people would stand there for minutes on end not moving.

After I shot it from the normal side for a bit, I headed back out. The whole park it was in was also fenced off so there was one entrance and exit. After exiting, I saw a little cafe on the back side lower level and to my surprise The Bean rose above them. I stood up on a 3 foot brick wall there to get some elevation and make The Bean rise higher and got what I think are some really nice shots. I shot tighter with just the fencing and The Bean, but I also shot wider like in this one, and I liked it because of the people eating below it, almost like they are oblivious to the fact that while they are eating, The Blob is about to devour them for lunch!!!!!!

All comments are welcome,

Jim

That is a different view of this art piece than what usually gets posted. This is actually a better view since it reflects the unpopulated roof in front of it instead of the selfie line.

Thanks Alan. I am really glad I lucked into this one, I certainly didn't have to walk this direction to get back to where my Jeep was parked. So I feel pretty fortunate. And I like the skyline that is reflected in this view.

I like this comp a lot! Actually, I did not know the cafe existed, since when you enter the park you're at the higher level with The Bean.

I've never heard it called The Blob before. Sounds like a 1950's SciFi B movie! The real name is Cloudgate by artist Anish Kapoor. You can read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloud_Gate.

Congrats Jim! You got an interesting new take of The Bean!
