The Colors of Winter

Colors are to die for on this image! I wish every visit to the coast got me a sky like this, but I know the odds are against it - good job!

Thanks Michael - I used to spend a minimum of 3-4 nights each visit at the Harris Beach campground when I still had my RV hoping to get at least one day with a good sunrise and the rest would be duds. When a good one shows up be out on the beach in the dark and never stop shooting until all the color is gone. Best months for Harris Beach are December and January when the sun is farthest south and aligns with the coast down there.

Excellent image, Alan. The colors are great.
Thanks Doug - on the days where the colors were good it was almost hard to keep up with which way to turn and shoot next before the show was over. This was one of those mornings and have posted some scenes from this particular morning and still have quite a few more that haven't been processed.

Does it seem to you that sunsets last longer along the coast? I have seen some that last the better part of an hour. The video that Jameel shared probably explains why.

Definitely - no obstructions out over the ocean where the colors originate (assuming no marine layer of course). I have shot a number of sunsets down at this park that lasted at least 1/2 hour or even slightly longer.

Oh man.... This was a shock to my senses Alan as I was thinking snow, especially after just looking at Kyle's recent thread from Norway. The beach scene was mentally shocking! But what a great scene. Love the colors you got in this. You got all of the sunset colors for a whole year bottled up in this. :)

Thanks Jim - I figured the colors part of the title would give it away :) This is actually a sunrise scene.

Great colors Alan. My visits have been more of summer/fall and had no such luck with colors this intense. Looks like I was there at the wrong time all along.

Thanks Jameel - I have stopped by there in late May before but the best colors are usually between mid November and March. December and January are great because the sun angle is almost in line with the coast in that area. Most of Oregon's coastline faces due west while this beach faces more to the south.
