Here’s one of this season’s grandest and yet frequently overlooked deep sky imaging targets, The Cone Nebula ! It’s a huge cloud of mostly hydrogen (red) gas with a little oxygen (blue) thrown in too. It lies about 2700 light years out and is located in Monoceros, just to the left (east) of Orion.
This image represents about 3 hours of total exposure time captured 3 minutes at a time on a dark night with a 5 inch refractor.
