The Eye of the Pyramid!

Who knew? We have a pyramid in America! :)

The Ames Memorial is a memorial to President Lincoln, it's off the I-80 between Cheyenne and Laramie in Wyoming. I have stopped there a bunch of times. It's one of my Sunset locations I keep in my head when traveling.

It's the new moon coming, but unfortunately in Northern Colorado and surrounding areas, the weather forecast has a lot of clouds in it. So last Tuesday, it was showing clear up in Southern Wyoming. I needed a location within 2 hours of my daughters house as the grandkids had a lot going on. So Ames Memorial fit the bill.

I did set up 2 cameras to catch the Milky Way, but knowing the shape of the Pyramid, I went up there with the idea of doing some star trails with Polaris right above the to top of the Pyramid.

(The top might look flat, but it is actually peaked, they just changed the angle of it for the cap for some reason)

This is 50 images stacked in the Startrails app, to turn them into star trails. I had the fill Gap option on.

Satellite trails are getting so crazy as most of you know. And for me, they will totally ruin star trails. In the Nightscaper group on FaceBook, a couple of the guys made a program to remove the Satellite trails from night time images. They just came out with it recently, so I thought it was a good time to try it.

The link is www.Startrailcleanr.com

And it worked pretty well, and was pretty quick too. So for those of you who do night time photography, you should check it out. It's a little tricky to install on a PC since it's just a home made app, but it's worth installing.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

Thanks Alan! I don't do Star trails a lot as I believe they need to have a complimentary ground layer to go with them. This one seemed perfect.

First astro photo I've seen of this place. I really like the swirly star trails, kinda like a vintage portrait lens' bokeh!

You could use the polygonal selector and clone tool to make the top more pointy. I think that would make it more like a pyramid. I've seen other pyramid monuments where they change the angle of slope just below the top, so they must have a good reason for doing this but I agree it lessens the aesthetic appeal. Why do they not consult a photographer before making these decisions? 🙄

Thanks Michael. Yeah, I hadn't seen any of this place before either, so I thought that was cool.

And yeah, pyramids should have pointy tops! They need to send the engineers that designed this to Egypt perhaps.
