"The Great Stare Down"
I had an interesting encounter with a horse while in Utah shooting images of the Onaqui herd of wild horses. I had walked down to look at a pipe that was cemented into the ground and was sticking up about four feet. There was not any type of marker that would explain its presence so far out in federal land. The main herd was safely behind me and walking away. Four horses were off in the distance in front of me when the foal they were guarding finished it's nap and stood up. The adults immediately started walking in the direction of the herd. I thought this would give me the opportunity to capture some nice images of the foal. A large adult walked up near to the cemented pipe and preceded to just stare at me. I thought this was awesome, because I could get some close up images of her. Other than turning her head occasionally from side to side, she did not move. The other horses walked past on either side, with plenty of room between us, and did not pay any attention to me. After taking pictures of the foal, I turned back and the horse was still staring at me. It had been what seemed like five or six minutes when I finally determined that it would be wise for me to move. I moved a safe distance to the side. The horse walked up to the pipe and began a long scratching session, using the pipe to scratch both sides of her face and her neck. I thought is was just hilarious!
