The Imperial Sand Dunes, also known as the Algodones Dunes, are found on the eastern side of the Imperial Valley in Southern California. These dunes stretch for some 40 miles north to south and a few miles west to east, making them the largest mass of sand dunes in the state (The tallest dunes are the Eureka Dunes in Death Valley National Park). Because of their size and appearance, and proximity to Hollywood, they have been the filming location for some notable films such as Star Wars Return of the Jedi.
While on my recent motorcycle trip, I unexpectedly passed through these sand dunes on State Route 78, the black stripe that is visible in the center of this image. There is a paved road that leads to a vista point off the highway; I came to a complete stop on the bike and executed a U-turn to visit this vantage point, with my friend following shortly behind. We didn't linger for long at this spot, but we were happy with the decision to stop.
This is a three-image pano. I had to clone out some dust spots; it's time to get my sensor cleaned again...
