Guy has been posting some great images of Parry's Agave blooms lately. Those blooms represent the dying stages of the plant. They expend all of their energy to create that huge stalk and the beautiful flowers at the end of it. Although they can be called century plants they tend to only last abut twenty years or less.
The leaves of the plant can be beautiful as well and thus provide photographic opportunities most of the years before they die. Javelinas may take a bite out of the leaves or they can get diseases but if you look around long enough you can find some plants with perfect leaves like the one below.
