The Tree of Color

This is from Friday night May 10th. I had been communicating with Alisa about what looked to be a really big Aurora Show. As the day went on and it became more certain, I picked a spot I had scouted and captured the Milky Way from before. It was about a 3 hour drive for Alisa and about a 4 hour drive for me as I already had plans that day and was down in Denver helping with the grandkids as they had gymnastics and dance competitions there.

We wanted to get as far north as we reasonably could get, and we wanted water to reflect the colors and Glendo State Park in Wyoming has both. There was a few other people out there, but most of them left by about 1am. And even when they were there, everyone was respectful about not shining lights all over, it was a really nice little gathering.

The majority of my images were from either looking straight up at the sky as the aurora was dancing above our heads, or composed directly out over the water. I did take some images with trees, the area we were in, it just wasn't large enough to set up directly behind a tree. I was about 6 or 8 feet from this one, and I couldn't back up anymore as I had another tree behind me. But the 14mm has great DOF even at f2.8, so it worked well.

But it also meant that to get more sky I had to take this as a pano. It's a 3 shot Horizontal pano.
