Thinking of a new desktop

My current desktop is slowing showing its age. A pretty hefty system when I bought it almost a decade ago - i7 Core, 6 cores, 12 threads, 16GB RAM. Over time I added a new GPU, moved boot drive to SSD and upgraded the memory to 24GB (max the motherboard supports). It was upgraded over the years from Windows Vista to Windows 7 all the way to Windows 10. The overall performance may be partly due to that and a full reset may improve things a bit. Anyway seriously looking at a new system and debating whether go with Intel i9 Core X or AMD Ryzen 3950. I priced both (at avadirect.com) and they come out to about the same all else being the same. Looking at NVMe M.2 1T boot drive, 64G ram, NVIDIA 1650 GPU.

Thoughts on processor choice? Does it even make a difference? The safe choice is Intel in my view.

I have a 3yo AVA and you made a good choice here. Max the ram I have 256 and 2 mother board mounted SSD and 2 500 gb hd inside. I got a high end mb but don’t recall I probably have the specs. But after 3 yrs it’s probably all obsolete. I have not kept up on processors but I always prefer intel to AMD. Let us know as you refine

I can't assess, but I'm interested. Sounds like our desktops are in a similar situation with similar histories. With my new camera, I've learned that it just can't handle a 187MP RAW file. Something new may be coming soon.

Interesting. I think I have had my head in the sand as I hadn’t heard about an Intel i9 out. Though I know I have thought that the i7 has sure been out for a long time and I was surprised it hadn’t gotten upgraded.

I wasn't thinking 256GB RAM. Do you see it being used with your normal work flow. I was debating between 64 and 128. 2 mother board mounted M.2 NVMe SSDs are a good idea. I will be moving my current HDs to the new system (2x3TB).

Not sure I am using it all but I stitch 8 images into panos with my 5DS images without much problem

Finally pulled the trigger on a i9 Core X desktop. Now waiting for the stuff to be built and shipped which they is typically 2-3 weeks. Splurged a bit on the specs and the $$$s. The last desktop served me for over a decade. This one hopefully does atleast that if not more. The R5 will have to wait.

Core™ i9-10940X 14-Core 3.3 - 4.6GHz Turbo, LGA 2066, 165W TDP, OEM Processor with mild over clocking.
128GB Kit (8 x 16GB) Trident Z DDR4 3200MHz, CL16 Silver-Red, DIMM Memory
2 x 1TB 970 EVO Plus 2280, 3500 / 3300 MB/s, V-NAND 3-bit MLC, PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe, M.2 SSD

This sounds like a real screamer. Great after purchase service. I have had them fix a couple problems via internet to the OS when I screwed up my registry. .

This does sound so impressive Jameel! I am just a bit envious as I tap my fingers on the desk here. As Ben said, that should be a real screamer!

I'm looking forward to your test report - I need something that can handle a 187MP RAW file and my current desktop ain't it.

Sure thing Kyle. Eagerly waiting - it’s in the build stage now. If you want me to run a test raw of 187MP on it, I’ll be happy to.
