Three Seestar Captures

I went all the way across the road from my house last night with my Seestar and my mirrorless camera on a Polaris mount to do some shooting of a target that is hidden from view at home by some tall trees. Never have I ventured so far away with my astro gear, so I was naturally apprehensive about being out in the wild (in the middle of a park in a peaceful small town...) ;-) I spent a good couple of hours out there, and managed to shoot three targets worth keeping with my Seestar. They are NGC2174 (the Monkey Head Nebula, the target I was pursuing), along with M45 (the Pleiades) and NGC3372 (the eta Carinae nebula, which I posted a "real" image of yesterday).

Wow James!!! You are really scoring some great images with the SeeStar. I am glad you were able return with all body limbs intact from your outing last night! :)

Two questions.

How well does the Polaris work for Astro? What's the largest lens you have used and your longest shutter speed?

And, is the ETA Carinae visible year round for you?

Yeah, it was a perilous outing, full of danger and jeopardy, but I persevered in the face of the unknown mysteries of the other side of my road....

The Polaris does OK for me. I have managed to do some usable shoots on a 400mm lens if I keep the exposures short, but I generally stick to no longer than 200mm (which is still pretty good for an astro target). The thing is that it often will "kick"a bit at the beginning of a tracking routine, so you have to wait a moment after slewing to make sure you don't get that captured in your shot.

Very nice work James, it is fun to see what you can do with that little rig. I saw your amazing image of Eta Carinae with your serious astro gear, wondering how many 10 sec subs went into this version (i.e. how long is the total integration on this version?) Really nice colors and round stars. The Monkey Head is impressive too, very well done.

I know what you mean about being out away from your house or car when imaging. For some reason as soon as I do that my imagination starts conjuring up all sorts of images of robbers, mountain lions, and bears to worry about 🤪 😆 It doesn't exactly help that we have had both bears and mountain lions seen in our neighborhood before (although not a common occurrence by any means...)

IN any case, thanks for sharing these, very fun to see.
