Last week after 2 long nights of shooting Deep Space Astro in Joshua Tree National Park, I had planned to leave mid morning to head home after a bit of scouting around out in the desert. By the time I was done running around including trail running up 1500 feet up Ryan Mountain, I noticed that some clouds were beginning to flow in. Nicely shaped clouds. So instead of heading out of the park for lunch and then the 2 hour drive home, I decided to eat some beef sticks and peanuts and hang around for sunset as I had a feeling it could be a really cool sunset.
I slowly made my way too Arch Rock while taking several more scouting trips (I wanted to come up with some new locations to add to my normal spots). While at Arch Rock I ran into another Photographer named Jesse from the east coast of Canada and his wife Jessica. Hopefully they will join us here at FocalWorld.
So while I was set up in the normal spot to shoot Arch Rock where you are facing East, when the color starting hitting as the sun was setting, all of the action to begin with was to the West. So I grabbed up some of my gear and hopped over a few rocks to get across to the Arch and then on the back side of it. I took a few shots that looked cool, but this one I think I liked best. I had my Sigma 14mm f1.8 lens on as I had wanted to get the whole arch in from the other side. As I was coming back through the arch, with the 14mm I could get down and low and allow the 14mm to frame the inside of the arch with the cloud rays going off to the west. Anyway, I liked it. It got a little bit of glow under the arch, nothing I really noticed when shooting but I noticed it while processing. Not like Mesa Arch in Utah, but still kind of cool.
Deep Space Astro Photography and some pretty Epic looking sunsets? Now that made of a great 3 days.
