Trumpeter Swans in Slocan.

Trumpeter Swans come to the Slocan River in B.C. to overwinter as the water stays open and there is lots of vegetation for them to eat. It was a great day to see them as I was able to reach the river's edge by advancing out of the forest each time the bird dipped its head under the water to get more to eat.

A Common Goldeneye duck just happened to be swimming by the dipping swan.

Very similar to the Tundra Swans that winter down in the area where I live. Very majestic creatures and some nice captures of them.

The black markings between the beak and the eyes differentiate these specimens from the Tundra swans I usually see.

Thanks Alan.. I think most Tundras also have some yellow by the eye and are a bit smaller, although I find size difficult to determine in the field.

Yup - the Tundras don't have black extending all the way from the beak to the eyes. I am utterly clueless when it comes to accurately determining size in the wild and I have never seen both next to each other.
