Unexpected Sunrise

The forecast had been for clear skies at sunrise but you just never know. Camping out in my Jeep in 0 degree weather can get a bit chilly. My iPhone despite being plugged in died, my key fob for the jeep must have died also as the alarm went crazy as I tried to open the door of my jeep in the early morning. I did manage to get my iPhone restarted and it ran just long enough for the 6:30 alarm to go off so I knew at least with everything going on that sunrise was coming soon.

I looked outside and other then a small thin cloud or two, there was not a cloud in sight in that early morning light. So I decided to set about getting everything back running and working despite it being so cold. I looked up at the sky as sunrise and despite no clouds I liked the hint of light on the peaks. I got my cold weather gear on and grabbed my camera gear. My first 5 or 6 shots as I looked back at them showed the peaks at the Dallas Divide in SW Colorado with no real clouds and just some nice early morning light.

But then to the east I saw this nice burn starting to develop with some clouds starting to appear on the eastern horizon. As I took a few shots of them, I all of a sudden saw a ton of clouds to the south appearing over the mountains. Within a matter of 2 or 3 minutes all of these clouds appeared all over and I was suddenly shooting in 360 degrees! It was fun and exciting as it always is, the biggest challenge was shooting while trying to keep my fingers somewhat warm.

What I had found interesting at the Dallas Divide was that even though there had last been a fresh snow fall 3 days earlier, the parking lot and adjacent area's at the Dallas Divide was full of virgin snow without a single foot print to be seen. It always amazes me that for the madhouse of people that are up there for Fall Colors there, that in the winter there is not another photographer to be found. Winter offers a different type of beauty then the fall colors, but it's still incredibly beautiful so I am always surprised that there just is no one else out there.

All comments are welcome,

Jim

Beautiful scene - glad to hear about the temperatures instead of experiencing them first hand :D That tale alone describes why there were no other footprints.....

Hmmmm…. I have always lived by the no guts no glory theme, so yeah, that may explain the lack of foot prints.

I am with Alan, camping at 0 degrees is not in my DNA. But you got a very good reward for your efforts.

It's really nice when average conditions quickly turn around. This (probably) makes up for the last few disappointing conditions you experienced :)
